Transitioning from L2 to L3+ autonomy is harder than it looks
Hands-on autonomy – Common Today
Level 0
The driver is in control at all times. Features are limited to providing warnings.
LEVEL 1 - ASSISTANCE
Features are limited to steering or brake/acceleration support to the driver.
LEVEL 2 - PARTIAL AUTOMATION
Features provide supervised steering and brake/acceleration support to the driver. L2+ extends operational comfort and safety.
Hands-off autonomy – Complex and Rare
LEVEL 3 - CONDITIONAL AUTOMATION
The driver is not always in control or monitoring. Features include low speed fully automated driving. Level 3+ means extended operational conditions.
LEVEL 4 - HIGH AUTOMATION
The vehicle can drive completely autonomously (including without occupants) in certain geo-fenced areas.
LEVEL 5 - FULL AUTOMATION
The vehicle can drive completely autonomously in any scenario. All occupants are passengers.
